Quilting is a great personal gift to give for any occasion, but a T-shirt quilt is even more personal if done right. The quilt above was given to our band director as a gift for 20 years of teaching and is made out of all the band shirts designed during those years. You can make quilts out of sorority or fraternity shirts, sports shirts, or just shirts that someone wore that signify who they were during a certain time in their life. I just learned about someone who takes the old tattered jeans of her grandchildren and makes a cozy patchwork quilt out of it for the kids to bum around with. This makes the quilt sturdy and perfect for bringing to places where it could get dirty or stomped on (which you wouldn't want to do to most other quilts).
One of the best ways I've seen this done, however, is with the shirts of a deceased loved-one. We had a friend recently loose her husband to prostate cancer and her quilter friend asked her for some of his old shirts (the ones she didn't still want to wear to remember him). Then she put them together in a quilt so our friend could have a comfortable reminder of him to wrap up in whenever she wanted. Quilting, although it takes a lot of supplies to start up, is fairly easy to do. T-shirt quilts are especially inexpensive and a great project for learning.
