Knit/Crochet Blankets

Warm winter blanket for my brother and sister-in-law.
For this gift, you may have to learn a new skill. I learned through YouTube videos and some free patterns from Free-KnitPatterns.com. Depending on the occasion, you may end up spending just as much or more than you would on a store bought blanket, but if you want something with meaning this is the way to go. Scarves are much cheaper and usually a better route if you need something quick (see blog on handmade scarves).

A blanket I knitted as a Christmas present.
I received several quilts for my wedding, some made just for me and my new husband and some handed down through the generations. I don't know how to quilt yet so I knit blankets for birthday and Christmas gifts. Crocheting is a little faster and easier if you're just starting out (also look to YouTube for help there). Usually, I give a blanket to a couple as a combined gift because it takes so long to make and still costs around $30 in supplies. Once you've learned how to get through a blanket or scarf without a giant hole somewhere in the middle, the things you make by hand will be appreciated.  Stick with colors that the person or couple already likes (not just a pattern you think is cool) so they'll want to keep it out more than just when you come around.
