Basket of Books
Books are a valuable and sometimes forgotten part of a young child's upbringing. Even though libraries are always an option, preschoolers can be rough on books, so it's good for them to have a few of their own. I can find books that are as good as new at my local thrift stores. I clean the covers with multipurpose cleaners (to get off the price and clear away germs), and the pages if it's a board book. For this basket, I choose some Winnie-the-Pooh classics, a Dr. Seuss favorite of mine, a book on things to do with your kids in Southern California (where I live), and a Maurice Sendak pop-up book called "Mommy?". It's good to choose some of your own favorites so that you know what you're giving (not all children's books are good). I also bought a brown basket at Home Depot for $6.50 (they have them in their organizational bins section) so she could have some storage for little socks or onesies. I lined the basket with a baby blanket I made (see my blog on baby blankets) and called it a day. The total for the yarn, basket, and books was about $15. You may want to get something more practical instead (like a bag of diapers), but this has character and a lot more variety for a good price.
